Community Education
Sunshine Preschool and Childcare, CEID’s inclusive and bilingual (spoken English and sign language) childcare program is unique in providing specialized care for both hearing children and children with hearing loss. It was created to give working parents of children enrolled in CEID’s special education classes the opportunity to be part of an extraordinary bilingual and affordable childcare program.
Sunshine Preschool and Childcare also creates the opportunity for hearing children in the community to interact with their peers who have special needs, which in turn fosters kindness and compassion.

Sunshine Preschool and Childcare
Sunshine Preschool, based at the CEID West Berkeley Center, is for all children 2 to 5 years.
The curriculum encourages active learning and supports the needs of young learners and emphasizes kindergarten readiness for children 4 to 5 years.
Bilingual instruction, sign language, and spoken English combine to help alleviate frustration for new talkers and provide opportunities for older students to learn early spelling, fine motor coordination, and communication with their hearing loss peers that come for afternoon childcare.
As an inclusive educational experience, students develop sensitivity and compassion, and learn positive attitudes toward diversity.
