Custom-Built Facility
Through generous donations of dollars, services, and materials, CEID was able to purchase land and build a school customized to the needs of young children who are deaf and hard of hearing. It is the only center of its kind in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Our ‘campus’ includes a toddler classroom, a preschool classroom, and an inclusive community preschool and childcare center for both hearing children and children with hearing loss. The classrooms’ radiant floor heating system is completely quiet (unlike central heating) so it doesn’t distract the children or interfere with the efficiency of hearing aids and cochlear implants. Our specially designed playground surface is made from recycled rubber and offers protection for children during running, climbing and active play. Our climbing structure offers creative challenges for very young children and more curious climbers and includes an aluminum slide; plastic slides can erase or re-map the programs installed in cochlear implants.
The Center also has three observation rooms equipped with one-way mirrors so that parents, visitors, funders, policy makers, and health professionals can view classroom activities without distracting children and teachers. There are two auditory training/speech therapy rooms and a Parent Library where books, videotapes, and other resources are available to families. Recently, CEID added a state-of-the-art audiology suite offering comprehensive services, including outpatient newborn hearing screenings, complete diagnostic evaluations, and hearing aid dispensing services for people of all ages, from newborns to the elderly.
