Each month, pediatric residents and medical providers from around the Bay Area visit CEID to observe our classrooms and therapy sessions to learn techniques to support patients who are deaf and hard of hearing. Because local medical schools and residency programs do not provide specialized education on early identification of deafness, this training educates health care providers about the importance of diagnosing deafness at birth, the referral process, effective and comprehensive early intervention strategies and information to support parents during their first few weeks and months of the diagnostic process. Residents also increase their understanding of the limitations and benefits of hearing aids, use of sign language, and protocols used to determine a child’s candidacy for cochlear implants or hearing aids. Through grant funding and donor support, each resident receives a complimentary copy of our Pediatric Resource Guide to Infant and Childhood Hearing Loss, a unique publication that was designed specifically for medical providers.

The majority of California students who are deaf or hard of hearing receive their education in mainstream settings. These students need specialized support services to thrive in mainstream educational settings. Masters-level professional staff provide direct service, consultation and professional development to schools serving these students.
Direct itinerant support to students can be provided by Teachers of the Deaf. Teachers work with students from early intervention through high school to provide them the support to learn alongside hearing peers. Teachers provide academic assistance, pre-teaching of vocabulary and background information, developing listening and language competency, promoting self advocacy and social skills. Teachers also provide support and training in daily management of FM systems and personal amplification. Classroom observation, evaluations and participation in IEP and 504 Meetings occur.
